It's a blog by one of the family members of the owners of the property. Apparently, the episode was filmed in May 2011 and was quite a production, not the casual drop-in as the show would have viewers believe.
Not the first time I've seen talk of well planned 'spontaneous' visits. It's still a fun show though.

I thought it was hilarious when Frankie's car didn't start up -
Too bad the guy didn't want his bus back, that would have been something to reunite the two. Oh, well, as he said, it was the start of his bad luck, whatever that was.
I'm glad they bought a lot at the family farm that needed the money - but he should have asked more for the halloween collectibles - those are really hot, all halloween is hot.
I liked the guy at the end - the older southern gentleman - he had some gooood stuff!

Thanks for posting the article Jake - it was a good one. Pretty much as I expected - how the show gets put together. A real production! It's okay, I still watch the show and enjoy the picking part.

It's nice to see first hand accounts of how these shows are put together. Many that are out there are fake or have some kind of agenda. Yours was a nice behind the scenes story that didn't try to force an opinion one way or another. That is rare, and is appreciated.

No problem Suze. I haven't taken the show at face value since the early part of Season 1. Besides, I enjoy the behind the scenes stuff. Your post just confirms alot of stuff.
Back on the History Boards we had a guy that had been picked on the show, Nobel. I wish I had saved his posts on the visit. He had lots of little nuggets of info. Some of it really came as a surprise. He said the experience was positive, for the most part.

I finally got around to reading your blog. Totally enjoyed it. You lifted the veil nicely and it was interesting to say the least. I liked the way Picker Mike warmed up to your dog.

Thanks, Suze, it was great to read an insiders experience with the show.
To me the "real" things about the show are the finds, the experience with the people and places, and the fact that Mike, Frank, and Dannie always seem to be genuinely nice to the people they visit.
Usually, everyone seems to enjoy the experience...I can live with all the scripting and prep...but it does kinda blow Dannie's last minute call scenario, telling Mike and Frank that she found them a pick...heh heh heh.

How big was the production crew?
About how much more did they buy than what they aired?
Did they leave with the items or have someone pick them up later?
Did you feel okay with what they paid?
Were the negotiations real? Coached?
Did the show pay an appearance fee?
Did they tell yall to not mention the show? Recognize them? Etc? No one ever recognizes them.

That offers a lot of insight on what goes on at these picks. Also, it shows that they differ. For example, for Nobel they flew in and met the crew for the visit. then flew out.
It disappoints me that they didn't give some sort of appearance fee. Personally, I've always hoped that some of the low balling they do was made up for by some sort of an appearance fee...especially since they seem to be paying less for items now.
The thing with recognizing them has always made me chuckle a bit. No one ever mentions knowing who they are or having seen the show...odd given that so many (if not all) of the picks are arranged. The only one that comes to mind where they are recognized was Hippie Tom's pick where he was obviously star struck and kept referencing being a fan and having seen how it works on the show. I'm glad you confirmed that for me.
